Adjara was under Ottoman rule for centuries and was reunited with the rest of Georgia, then part of the Russian Empire, after the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–1878. Its autonomy dates from 1921 and was tied to its large Muslim population. Its capital, Batumi, is Georgia's main Black Sea port.
