Shida Kartli ('Inner Kartli') is the historic heart of eastern Georgia, with the ancient rock-cut town of Uplistsikhe near Gori. In August 2008 Russian aircraft bombed Gori and Russian troops occupied the city for over a week; today the occupation line runs a short drive north of it.
