According to legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali founded Tbilisi in the 5th century after finding hot sulfur springs here while hunting; the name comes from the Georgian word for 'warm'. In 1921 the Soviet Red Army captured the city, ending Georgia's first period of independence.
